• 199 cotton genotypes and six agronomic traits were selected for drought assessment. • Plant height and seed cotton yield prioritized in drought resistance screening. • D value should be the primary assessment index, CDC and WDC values as supplementary • Drought resistance performance varied significantly among genotypes and sites. • Three universal drought resistance and high-yield genotypes were selected.
