Current markets of air conditioners are highly competitive, therefore, the manufactures focus on comfort improvements and decreasing costs. The best practice in cost reduction is the exclusion of several circuits or parts in the device and the transfer of their functions to other parts and control algorithms. For example, the cost of air conditioners can be significantly decreased if lubricant preheaters, implemented as separate devices, are excluded and compressor oil is heated using motor windings as heaters. The main disadvantage of this approach is an increase in heating time, caused by the distant location of motor and oil. To overcome the abovementioned problem, this article proposes dynamic heating of the lubricant oil, which significantly decreases the time required for preheating. Instead of conventional oil-sump heating, the authors suggest heating the oil pump located inside the motor shaft. If the temperature of the oil pump is hot enough, the cold oil, moving from the oil sump at the bottom to compressor moving parts at the top, heats during pumping and reaches the target parts having the required temperature. Therefore, the proposed method excludes conventional preheater and decreases preheating time at 4.1% and 22.2%, comparing to internal and external preheaters, respectively.
