An account is given of progress over the past 20 years in dynamic ring opening polymerization, D-ROP. DROP is a form of self-assembly in which a metal ion is typically combined with a flexible bidentate ligand that may form either a macrocycle, a ring-opened oligomer or a polymer, with the polymer formed only during crystallization. This method has yielded coordination polymers with remarkably high selectivity, and the polymers can be designed with a wide arrange of additional functionality. This review outlines the principles, illustrated with selected examples, and outlines what is currently known about the mechanisms of the self-assembly. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
