• Chromium doped CoFe2O4 (CFO:Cr) nanoparticles were used as redox powder in SC electrodes • CFO:Cr based supercapacitors (SCs) produced max. energy density of 152.4 Wh kg-1 • CFO:Cr nanoparticles deposited in SC electrodes boosted the capacitance by 78% • Cr3+, Co3+/Co2+ and Fe3+/Fe2+ were identified as the redox centers for charge storage
