Abstract

• ABS cores reached 11185 N peak force and 100 J absorption at high energy. • PP cores exhibited superior specific energy absorption up to 0.180 J/g at 15 J. • 3D-printed ABS cores restricted damage zones to 25–30 mm at 100 J. • Asymmetric face sheet configurations reduced peak contact force by up to 52%. • PP core failure shifted from bending to perforation between 15 J and 100 J.
