• Nd addition remarkably refines the grain size and effectively suppresses the dynamic recrystallization of extruded Mg-8Gd-1Sm-0.5Zr alloy. • Nd triggers the massive precipitation of fine and dispersed Mg-RE second-phase particles in the alloy matrix. • The alloy with 2 wt.% Nd exhibits optimal mechanical properties and excellent high-temperature stability. • Fine-grain strengthening and second-phase strengthening act as the dominant strengthening mechanisms for the alloy.
