• The integration of Pusa Decomposer with residue incorporation significantly increased labile and non-labile phosphorus. • Decomposer-amended treatments enhanced transformation of recalcitrant phosphorus forms • Conventional residue burning was associated with reduced enzymatic activity and accumulation of stable phosphorus pools. • Findings demonstrate the potential of microbial decomposer-based residue management to improve soil phosphorus bioavailability • This will reduce dependence on inorganic phosphorus fertilizers in intensive cereal-based systems
