• Sulfur forms in char gasification was controlled significantly by gasifying agent. • H2S was mainly formed under steam gasification; COS and SO2 were promoted under CO2. • Inorganic sulfur was nearly decomposed, leaving organic sulfur as the main forms. • Sulfur species were mainly generated in initial high-temperature zone of the reactor.
