• Bio-activities were inhibited upon Ru/Fe-bioelectrodes exposure to DCF stress. • The biodiversity of bioanode decreased under DCF stress, but increased in biocathode. • Most functional genes in Ru/Fe-bioelectrodes with DCF stress were affected adversely. • Ru/Fe-biocathode was more resistant to DCF stress than Ru/Fe-bioanode.
