Effects of supplementation with distillers' dried grains containing different amino acid concentrations: impacts on cattle performance during the backgrounding phase

This study evaluated the effects of supplementation with distillers dried grains (DDG) containing different amino acid concentrations (AA(+), higher density of essential and non-essential amino acids; AA(−), lower density of essential and non-essential amino acids on the productive performance of Nellore bulls during the backgrounding phase in an intensive feedlot system. Forty-eight Nellore steers (8 ± 1.0 months of age; 220.00 ± 24.00 kg body weight) were assigned to two dietary treatments in group pens: 1.00 kg/animal/day of AA(+) DDG, or 1.00 kg/animal/day of AA(−) DDG plus 0.110 kg/animal/day of urea to ensure isonitrogenous diets, with corn silage (ad libitum) as the forage base. The experimental period lasted 68 days (12 days of adaptation, 56 days of data collection). Nutrient intake did not differ (P > 0.05) between treatments, except for amino acid intake, which was greater (P < 0.05) in animals fed AA(+) DDG. Digestibility of dry matter, ash- and protein-free neutral detergent fiber, and organic matter was higher (P < 0.05) with AA(+) DDG, while non-fibrous carbohydrates, crude protein, and ether extract digestibility were unaffected. Urinary and fecal nitrogen were lower (P < 0.05), and nitrogen retention and retained-to-consumed nitrogen ratio were higher (P < 0.05) with AA(+) DDG, whereas nitrogen intake and absorbed nitrogen were unchanged. Microbial efficiency was not affected (P > 0.05) by treatment. Animals fed AA(+) DDG had greater (P < 0.05) final shrunk body weight, total shrunk weight gain, and average daily gain compared with those fed AA(−) DDG, indicating improved productive performance and supporting the potential of AA(+) DDG as a viable alternative to conventional protein sources in intensive backgrounding systems.
