• HKUST-1 was synthesized via a green DMF-free water/ethanol solvothermal route.RHA optimizes the pore structure of LDCS at high temperatures. • The optimized sample achieved a high methane uptake of 224.28 cm3/g at 35 bar. • Synthesis temperature and time regulated accessible micropore volume and connectivity.
