A three-dimensional wheel-rail rolling contact model (3D WRRCM) is typically employed to address high-frequency nonlinear interaction problems between wheels and rails. Although this model accurately captures the high-speed motion, rotation and realistic contact mechanics of wheelsets, it requires significant computational resources. To significantly reduce the computational cost, this paper develops an efficient wheel-rail rolling finite element model (EWRRFEM), integrating a two-dimensional (2D) contact algorithm to calculate three-dimensional (3D) wheel-rail responses. This model aims to analyse the dynamic responses of wheelsets and tracks in high-speed railway systems. Initially, a 3D wheel-rail contact framework is developed, then simplified to a 2D contact modal. This simplification decouples the contact state from the 3D rolling dynamics, substantially reducing the degrees of freedom and enhancing computational efficiency. Integrating the simplified 2D wheel-rail contact model with 3D dynamic responses enables accurate characterisation of wheel-rail interaction phenomena. This approach maintains the accuracy inherent to the full 3D rolling contact finite element model (FEM) while markedly increasing computational performance. The results indicate close agreement between both models regarding wheel-rail forces under welding joint and rail corrugation wear excitations, with the proposed EWRRFEM demonstrating a computational efficiency improvement of 480%.
