• An electrode potential of 0 V can inhibit the generation of volatile sulfur compounds. • Sulfate reduction was accelerated with an electrode potential of 0.5 V. • More electroactive humic acids were secreted with an electrode potential of 0 V. • Appropriate electrode potential can promote the system’ s electron transfer capacity. • Biological and biochemical electron transfer behaviors jointly affect changes of VSCs.
