• The PANI and PANI/NiL composite was deposited through electrochemical method. • The PANI/NiLcomposite displays a coarser fiber surface along with some void space. • The composite show pronounced electrochemical properties than pure polyaniline. • The PANI/NiL composite has a specific capacitance of 381 F g−1 at 1 A g−1.
