• Deep nitrogen fertilization can alleviate N2O emission risks caused by plastic film mulching. • NO3--N in 0–10 cm soil layer is the key factor associated with N2O emission. • Soil water in 0–10 cm soil layer is the key driver of maize yield increasing. • DPF shows strong yield potential and clear short-term emission reduction advantages under future climates. • DNDC simulations show mulching plastic mitigates N2O emissions induced by long-term deep nitrogen application.
