In the present study, the characteristics of the steady state turbulent convective heat transfer are experimentally investigated for gamma-Al2O3/water nanofluid used in engine cooling. The tests were performed using gamma-Al2O3 nanoparticles with diameters range of (21-37) nm. The cylinder head of the engine was simulated as rectangular duct made of cast iron with aspect ratio of 0.8. The effect of nanoparticles volume concentration (0-2%), bulk temperature (60-80 degrees C), and flow velocity (1-2 m/s) are investigated for variable heat flux (100-400 kW/m(2)). The results showed that the convective heat transfer coefficient is directly proportional with the flow velocity and inversely proportional with bulk temperature. The highest heat transfer coefficient is 78.67% which achieved at 1% volume concentration of nanoparticles compared with pure water. The gamma-Al2O3 water nanofluid should be used to cool the cast iron components of the engine with limitations. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
