• La-Co sol-gel coating enhances capacity retention of Li-rich cathodes. • Optimal 0.1–0.2 mol% coating balances high capacity and structural stability. • Coating suppresses spinel phase transition revealed by Raman spectroscopy. • Coated electrodes show improved cycling and rate performance at high C-rates.
