• Woodchip bioreactors effectively treated drainage from a municipal land treatment system. • 50% removal efficiency required 8 h (warm season) and 12.5 h (cool season) HRT. • Ethanol dosing increased removal efficiency from 27% to 93% at 6.6 h HRT in cool conditions. • Ethanol dosing increased removal rate from 4.2 to 14.3 g N/m3/day. • Site-specific optimal C:N ratio dosing (0.75:1) maximised removal while limiting sulphate reduction.
