• Rust propagation and coalescence were modeled from 24,000-h Indoor CCT. • A rust area-based stochastic simulation for coated steel was developed. • The model was validated using seven-year outdoor exposure test result. • Visible rust area rate was linked to ISO-based repainting timing.
