• Colloid-facilitated transport (CFT) was observed for Cd and Pb in saturated soils. • pH and ionic strength affect colloid mobilization and CFT. • Column tests show episodic release of colloid-bound metals in different conditions. • HYDRUS-1D and computational-based model reproduce breakthrough curves. • Leachate metal concentrations exceed WHO limits in CKDu-affected regions.
