• Morphology-controlled Co3O4 dictates OER–CER selectivity in seawater electrolysis. • Cubic Co3O4 achieves > 92 % OER Faradaic efficiency with minimal CER contribution. • Truncated Co3O4 exhibits facet-driven CER enhancement through oxygen migration. • Kinetic and DFT analysis reveal morphology-sensitive CER vs invariant OER. • Findings provide a mechanistic basis for designing OER-selective seawater catalysts.
