• ZnCo2O4/ZnO microflowers and microsheets were simply prepared. • The ZnCo2O4/ZnO microflowers delivered the highest specific capacity of 391.2 C g−1. • Superior cycling performance was achieved over 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. • The HSC device delivered an energy density of 42.0 W h kg−1 at 979.9 W kg−1.
