• The Baijianghe Peatland records reveal markedly divergent evolutionary patterns for regional and local fire over the past 3000 years. • Regional fire intensified under cold-dry climate until 1900 cal yr BP, after which human activities dominated. • The warm-humid climate drove local fire intensification during 3000–1900 cal yr BP, and the fire-climate coupling reversed during 1900–950 cal yr BP, with human activities dominating after 950 cal yr BP.
