• First ecotoxicological assessment of Clibanarius erythropus exposed to Cu and Cd. • Cadmium showed markedly higher acute toxicity than copper in 96-h LC50 assays. • ICP-MS confirmed hepatopancreas as main site for metal accumulation. • Metal exposure altered antioxidant defense and induced cellular stress. • Clibanarius erythropus as promising biomonitor for coastal metal pollution monitoring.
