• PEO solid electrolyte was prepared through a freeze-drying process. • Freeze-dried PEO electrolyte had lower crystallinity than conventionally dried one. • As a result, the low crystallinity led to high Li-ion conductivity. • The high Li-ion conductivity enhanced the cycling stability and rate capability.
