• Remote para-substituted α-diimine nickel catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for ethylene polymerization. • Ethylene polymerization showed temperature-dependent and non-monotonic substituent effects. • The n-pentyl-substituted catalyst showed negligible alcohol incorporation while allowing ester incorporation. • Polymerization temperature tuned polyethylene from semicrystalline thermoplastics to extensible elastomers.
