Effect of three types of silanes with the increased number of amino groups (n-dodecyl triethoxysilane (DTES), aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), 2-aminoethyl-3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS)) on cement hydration was investigated by means of calorimetry, ICP-OES, TOC analysis, and DLS measurement. It is found that an increased number of amino groups in the silane molecule can lead to a strong retardation effect on cement hydration. Further analysis indicates that this retardation effect is not primarily caused by the hindrance to clinker dissolution or by the prevention of nuclei formation, but by the inhibition of the growth of hydration products. The added aminosilanes can be strongly adsorbed on the newly formed C-S-H nuclei and complex with the free calcium ions in the pore solution. The adsorption amount and the amount of complexed calcium ions of silane increase with the number of amino groups in the molecular structure. Both of them could prevent the further growth of hydration products and eventually retard cement hydration.
