A novel fuzzy rule-based street lighting control system is proposed in this paper that aims at minimizing the energy consumption of LED street lamps while they operate under changing weather conditions. The proposed fuzzy controller includes fuzzy soft computing subsystems for determining the weather conditions from the measured data, and then for computing the visibility conditions therefrom, finally determining the forward current of the lamps. The most important adjustable parameters of the control system have been identified, and their effect on the performance has been investigated by simulation experiments. It has been shown, that a substantial, approximately 20% energy saving can be achieved in normal operating conditions.
