• This study is the first to show that the short-term response of ultrasound-assessed synovial inflammation to targeted therapy for RA was similar in women and men with active disease. Moreover, residual synovitis on ultrasound was similar in women and men who achieved clinical remission after targeted therapy for active RA. • Our study may provide insight into the causes of poorer therapeutic response in terms of pain and function in women, which may not be related to the response of joint synovial inflammation. This may assist in optimising targeted therapy and pain management in women with RA.
