Abstract

General three-dimensional (3D) analytical models have been proposed for slotted surface-mounted axial flux machines (AFMs) with odd-/even-piece triangular pyramid Halbach arrays. Taking four-/five-piece triangular pyramid Halbach arrays as examples, the 3D scalar potential governing equations for different regions can be uniquely solved according to the field boundary conditions. Based on this, the field and electromagnetic parameters can be derived. The predictions show that when compared with the conventional four-/five-piece Halbach arrays, the proposed models with optimized four-/five-piece triangular pyramid Halbach arrays exhibit excellent electromagnetic performance. Finally, the 3D analytical and finite element (FE) predictions for the proposed models have been compared.
