• Global conservative weak solutions are established for a class of weakly dissipative nonlinear dispersive wave equations. • Global existence of strong solutions is established for small initial data. • Global existence of strong solutions is established for sign-changing initial data. • A unified approach recovers and significantly extends known global existence results for a variety of classical models.
