• Multi-carbapenemase-producing Citrobacter freundii are distributed across multiple continents and geographic regions. • Phylogenetic analysis reveals high genetic diversity without clear geographic or clonal clustering. • Multiple plasmid replicon types co-exist within individual multi-carbapenemase-producing C. freundii isolates. • These findings identify C. freundii as an underappreciated reservoir and dissemination vector of carbapenemase genes.
