Abstract

• Grief is a universal response to loss, however, its neural mechanisms are poorly understood, hindering effective interventions. • Our findings show disruptions in networks related to emotion regulation, reward processing, and cognitive control in grieving individuals. • We propose that these alterations may lead to dysregulation of both the neuroendocrine and immune systems. • Future research should prioritse longitudinal studies to track neural, endocrine, and immune trajectories of grief.
