Advances in semiconductor technology has resulted in an escalation in the numbers and power ratings of non-linear loads connected to the power system. Moreover, power electronic equipment is increasingly used to control the power flow throughout the network and this equipment is also a source of harmonic distortion. Thus, the effect of these harmonic sources needs to be assessed and this paper provides an overview of the techniques currently available for the analysis of harmonic distortion in the large and complex modem power system.
