• UCNPs convert deep-penetrating NIR light to VIS/UV signals for neuromodulation. • UCNPs enable diverse modalities: optogenetics, photochemical control, optoelectronics, and visual modulation. • In vivo UCNP systems enable wireless deep-brain modulation and behavioral control. • Integrating UCNPs with sensing enables future closed-loop neuromodulation systems.
