The Hearing Aid Malfunction Detection Unit (HAMDU), a system that electrically checked for proper operation of several aspects of hearing aid function was described. HAMDU was a miniature, add-on device which performed a check of hearing aid operation about every 0.5 h and indicated malfunction by a highly visible, electrically tripped indicator. Functions checked included battery voltage, gain, distortion and noise, and continuity of the receiver cord. The indicator was also tripped if the hearing aid was turned off. HAMDU was small, low in cost, could be adapted to most body aids and had no effect on hearing aid performance. The primary features of the system were that the hearing aid was checked periodically throughout its use and the aid did not have to be removed from the wearer. The unit was designed specifically for body type hearing aids worn by children.
