• Heatwaves during embryogenesis increase prenatal mortality in zebrafish. • Longer heatwaves (48 h) induced earlier hatching but resulted in smaller larvae. • Embryos exposed to a 48-h heatwave swim longer at 35 °C after hatching, but not at 28 °C. • Survival drops even after short heat stress, like two repeated 6-h exposures at 35 °C, showing embryo heat sensitivity. • Heatwaves duration affects development: longer exposure affects hatching time, body size, and larval swimming, whereas survival drops regardless.
