• Developed active and selective Ni-based catalyst for carbon dioxide reduction • Tuned synthesis approach to yield hollow-structured ZIF-derived Ni-N-C catalyst • Identified atomically dispersed Ni atoms as active sites for CO2 reduction reaction • Implemented operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy to determine reaction mechanism • Verified much improved Ni-N-C catalyst performance in the CO2 electrolyzer cathode
