How do polycrystalline materials deform plastically?

摘要

Orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) and modem crystal plasticity theory have been used to understand in a fundamental way how plastic deformation occurs in crystalline solids. The orientation and size of neighboring grains is shown to strongly influence the local deformation experienced, by a given crystal. This can be reconciled using the principle of minimum energy dissipation. The Figure shows a sample of the data produced using OIM.
