• Degradation of AEMs depends strongly on alkaline vswater environments. • Radical-mediated oxidation is proposed as dominant degradation pathway in hot deionized water. • PiperION and OrION degrade in water despite alkaline stability. • PECH-based membranes show opposite stability trends in KOH and water. • Stability windows are defined from IEC and conductivity losses.
