Radiant surface burners have been used to enhance heat transfer by changing the burner radiance spectrum in order to match the absorption spectrum of a load better. It appeared, both theoretically and experimentally, that for loads like paper, only small improvements (less than 10%) are possible. For practical applications this probably reduces to only a few percent. Flue-gas radiation turned out to have a large effect on radiant heat transfer. (C) European Communities 1997.
