• Aqueous solution impregnation simulates in-situ pyrolysis catalyst loading. • Optimal tar yield 5.75% (62.9% relative increase) over same conditions without steam. • Mono-/bicyclic aromatics rise to 73.09%; phenol and alkylphenols account for 87.21%. • Bimetallic sites like Ca2Fe2O5 form, enhancing C-O and C-C bond cleavage.
