Adhesion and load-bearing capacity are the two key factors that determine the final performance of a coating, nevertheless, the adhesion of PVD coatings to stainless steel is sometimes insufficient due to surface characteristics of the substrate. In this research, CrN/CrAlN nanostructured multilayer coatings of different thicknesses were deposited by an industrial cathodic arc PVD process on AISI 420 stainless steel. Structural analysis and characterization of the coatings were performed by nano-indentation test, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Adhesion of the coatings to the substrate was evaluated by scratch test and Rockwell adhesion testing. Experimental results revealed that among the various parameters influencing the adhesion of nitride coatings to the substrate, the thickness was a dominant factor; the optimum value that provided the best adhesion was obtained at a thickness around 4 mu m. Overall results of this research confirmed that cathodic arc CrN/CrAlN coatings with the lowest residual stress and the highest elastic strain had the best adhesion behavior.
