Infrastructural hubris and platform power: the failed scalability of Google Stadia

This article examines Google Stadia, a cloud gaming platform that closed in 2023 after less than four years despite being built on Google’s global infrastructure. Through a thematic analysis of 170 documents including specialized press articles, Reddit discussions, and YouTube reviews, we investigate Stadia’s failure by examining its main stakeholders’ perspectives, i.e., gamers and game developers. Drawing on infrastructure studies’ focus on breakdown and failure alongside scholarship on platform power, we introduce the concept of infrastructural hubris, i.e., the overconfidence in technical capacity that leads to neglecting platform-level engagement with key communities. We illustrate this concept via three interconnected failures of the platform. First, Stadia provided inadequate incentives for both game developers and gamers, failing to resolve the ‘chicken and egg’ problem where neither side had sufficient reason to join the platform. Second, constant strategic pivots – from full-scale gaming platform to a white-label streaming technology – undermined stakeholders’ trust over Stadia’s brief lifespan. Third, despite Google’s global infrastructure, last-mile connectivity issues and incompatible development tools limited adoption by both users and developers. The case demonstrates that infrastructural power and platform power must be studied in tandem, as technical capabilities alone cannot achieve scalability without sustained engagement at the platform level.
