The evolution of wireless networks is set to undergo a significant transformation, moving beyond the enhancements introduced with 5G towards a revolutionary new paradigm. This shift is not just an upgrade of existing communication technologies but a fundamental reimagining of how wireless networks operate, driven by the integration of sensing capabilities as a core service. Modern advancements in signal processing and the miniaturization of microwave components have paved the way for deploying wireless sensors that are highly responsive to environmental changes. While contactless sensors embedded in various environments can meet the increasing demand for ambient intelligence, a more efficient approach involves integrating sensing functions directly into commercial communication devices, utilizing the same hardware, spectrum, and potentially even unified waveforms.
