Abstract
Probabilistic functionalism is the best broad descriptive term we have for Egon Brunswik’s work; it is the one he used, and it is far preferable to Brunswikianism, a label he would have found to be in bad taste. But the phrase probabilistic functionalism is somewhat forbidding, and its meaning is not immediately obvious; thus, new comers are confronted at the outset with an uninviting title. Although the mystery will disappear for the reader of Brunswik’s articles in this volume, we offer here a brief explanation to facilitate understanding his approach to psychology.
