• Eco-friendly leaching of spent printed circuit boards (WPCBs) of mobile phones using ionic liquids was investigated. • Leaching kinetics were well-fitted to the two equation models - a mixed-controlled and the internal diffusion control model. • High recovery efficiency (61–90 wt%) of all metals was achieved within 3 h at T = 318 K. • Separation of copper from leaching liquor electrochemically with a process efficiency of 95% was achieved.
