• A hydrogel with excellent water retention property was synthesized from bamboo powder. • Addition of diacetone acrylamide enhances water adsorption capacity of hydrogel. • BP-AD hydrogel could serve as the slow-release carrier of nutrients. • The release of nutrients from hydrogel is dominated by Fickian diffusion.
