Iron speciation and partitioning of micronutrient transition metals in laboratory synthesized hydrothermal plume particles

Hydrothermal fluxes of transition metals to the deep ocean are mediated by rapid precipitation of metalliferous particles and subsequent reactions with seawater as hydrothermal plumes disperse, potentially 1000 s of kilometers, within the deep ocean. Here, we investigate Fe speciation and micronutrient transition metal partitioning (V, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mo) within metalliferous particles synthesized by injecting 400 °C mineral-buffered hydrothermal fluid into artificial seawater at controlled mixing ratios (0%, 10%, 25%, 50% seawater) and seafloor pressures (250–500 bar), effectively reproducing the physical and chemical conditions of nascent hydrothermal plumes.
