• A precursor interface engineering strategy was proposed for reed straw-derived porous carbons. • KOH-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment deconstructed the compact lignocellulosic framework. • Potassium oxalate activation generated abundant ultramicropores and polar surface sites. • KRSO-700 achieved CO2 uptakes of 4.83 and 1.51 mmol g−1 at 298 K under 1 and 0.15 bar. • V0 dominated CO2 capture, while oxygen sites strengthened CO2–surface interactions.
